Dan Cook

Daniel “Cookie” Cook served as a dedicated member of Coquitlam Search and Rescue for 35 years, joining in 1976 while also serving with the District of Coquitlam Fire Department.
In an era before modern technology, Dan‘s exceptional navigation skills and leadership were crucial to countless successful missions.

His colleagues remember embarking on searches with nothing more than “a report of a vehicle and a trailhead” to guide them through the darkness of the Tri-Cities backcountry.
Dan established the team’s orienteering program and was instrumental in forming both the water rescue and rope rescue teams. Known for his compassionate yet educational approach with rescued hikers, he balanced empathy with ensuring lessons were learned.

The City of Coquitlam formally recognized Dan‘s extraordinary service in 2011. Though he officially retired that year, he continued to support SAR operations when possible.
Dan Cook passed away on March 14, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of service, outdoor stewardship, and community commitment. His “roll-up-his-sleeves” approach and dedication continue to inspire BC Search and Rescue today.

As Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart noted, Dan was “a very community-minded person, full of integrity”—a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to ensuring others could safely enjoy the wilderness he so deeply loved.
