Three members of Coquitlam SAR became certified as Transport Canada certified Masters, Skippers or Captains of a vessel under 5 gross tonnage and / or up to 12 passengers on a work boat or passenger vessel anywhere in Canada.
Jordan, Don and Robin attended the course which included the following topics

- Vessel Construction and Stability
- Aids to Navigation
- Electronic Navigation
- Search and Rescue
- Boat Handling
- Weather and Forecasting
- Tides and Currents.
While Ground Search and Rescue in British Columbia only includes inland waterways such as lakes and rivers, Coquitlam SAR’s area of responsibility includes Pitt Lake, one of the largest tidal lakes in the world, along with the Fraser River, Indian Arm, and Burrard Inlet. These waterways are filled with industrial and recreational marine traffic.
