The Diez Vista 50k Trail Race is an off-road ultramarathon race that takes place in the middle of the busiest part of Coquitlam SAR’s response area – in the complicated trail network extending from Sasamat Lake over to Eagle Ridge. When the team was approached by the race organizers to assist with some of the fist aid and logistics for the race, it seemed like a natural fit for members of the team to volunteer to help out.
As we posted previously on Social Media, one of our members in training, Steve Chapman, was contracted to produce the race map. He is a professional map maker, and the map speaks to his skill level. It also shows the terrain the race goes through, and the sheer length of the effort.
On race day, Saturday April 5th, over 15 SAR members were involved in various aspects of the race, from first aid, to staffing our information tent at the start/finish area at Sasamat Lake. It was a rainy day, and it was impressive to watch the participants take on the challenge.
On Tuesday this week, race director Wendy Montgomery came to our executive meeting to present the team with a generous $2000 donation from the race organizers. This was much appreciated, and will go toward assisting us to fund some of our projects this year, such as the replacement of our command vehicle, among other things.
Thanks to the Wendy and the other people behind the Diez Vista 50k, and we’re looking forward to next year!
